ASCUTNEY - Two suspects have been arrested in connection with last Monday's armed robbery of the Ascutney Sunoco station by a masked man with a gun who emptied the cash register. Robert "Bobby" Hutt, 40, of Windsor was arrested without incident late Saturday in a house in South Royalton after police picked up his girlfriend, Amy LaHaye, 29, earlier in the day in Hartford. Hutt and LaHaye are the suspects in the stickups of the Ascutney Sunoco, the Super 8 Motel in Hartford on Dec. 23, and the Citgo station in Williamstown on Wednesday evening. Hutt has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for drugs, burglaries and escapes. He is expected to be charged as a habitual offender with several counts of assault and robbery when the Vermont District Court in White River Junction opens Tuesday. The habitual offender status would make Hutt eligible for enhanced penalties of up to life in prison under the state's so-called "Three Strikes" law.

Julia Lloyd Wright Contributing Writer WEATHERSFIELD - Verizon Wireless is proposing construction of a 107-foot monopole telecommunications tower between Interstate 91 and Route 5 in Ascutney. The proposed location is the seasonal Getaway Mountain Campground, owned by Ellen Fraczek. At a Weathersfield selectboard meeting Thursday in Ascutney, land use administrator deForest Bearse said the proposed pole is designed to look like a pine tree, but the fact that the pole will extend 40 feet above the existing tree canopy drew various board comments, comparing the fake pine to a "bottle brush." Board member John Arrison said that "cell pines against a hill are OK," but he called them "foolish" looming above pines. Bearse said the tree design is less noticeable than regular poles. Vermont State Police are looking for an armed robber who stole cash from a gas station Monday night in Ascutney. Ragieenben Patel, owner of the Ascutney Sunoco on Vermont 131, was approached at about 10 p.m. by a masked man who pointed a gun at Patel and demanded money from the cash register, police said. The robber then collected an undetermined amount of money and told Patel to lie on the floor. Patel, while on the floor, shielded her six-month old baby from harm, police said. The robber got away with a "small amount" of cash, according to police. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Detective Sgt. Richard Holden at the Vermont State Police barracks in Brattleboro at 254-2383. From Burlington Free Press

Many locally flavored bills on the agenda
Matthew McCormick Eagle Staff Writer One wants to bump state payments for property it occupies in towns. Another hopes to allow New Hampshire justices of the peace to marry people in Vermont. Getting heavy trucks off local roads will be a priority for a third. Those are just some of the locally inspired pieces of legislation that Windsor and Windham County lawmakers hope to pursue once the Vermont Legislature reconvenes on Wednesday. It is a session that likely will be dominated by hot-button issues of statewide prominence, most significantly bringing relief to those whose rising property values have resulted in skyrocketing tax bills, majority leader Carolyn Partridge, D-Windham, said. *********************** Reps. Ernie Shand, D-Windsor, and Kathy Pellett, D-Chester, plan to introduce legislation aimed at visitors of another kind. At the request of a constituent, Shand said he hopes to extend reciprocity to New Hampshire justices of the peace, who right now only can obtain one-time permits for a fee to perform marriages in Vermont. The same is not true the other way around, with Vermont justices able to readily perform ceremonies in New Hampshire, he said. Read the full story at The Eagle Times
